Women's health has historically been under-researched, undervalued, and underserved, leading to growing concerns about the impacts of gender on health outcomes. Decades of insufficient investment have resulted in women often receiving delayed, ineffective, and at times harmful treatments. While there have been initiatives to address these inequities in recent years, significant barriers remain in effectively integrating women's health into research and its translation.
To enhance health outcomes for women, it is essential to better understand these gaps and the systematic, large-scale changes needed in the health and medical research landscape—covering aspects such as funding, conducting research, and translating findings into practice.
Research Australia is supported by Besins Healthcare to establish a women's research agenda for Australia, leveraging existing expertise and the current research landscape to improve the health of women. Activities to date have included a sector survey and desktop review to produce a report and draft agenda.
We are hosting a virtual Expert Roundtable on 10 December from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM AEDT. This workshop will bring together a diverse group of key stakeholders in women's health, including representatives from research, health systems, industry, and consumer groups. The purpose is to build consensus on the key issues and opportunities identified in the earlier stages of our project and to finalize an agenda for Australian Women's Health Research.
We invite you, or a representative from your organization, to join us in this critical conversation. Your insights and expertise are invaluable in shaping the future of women's health research and practice in Australia.
